Verizon Service at Brickyard

You may have noticed that, about June 15th, mobile coverage here at Brickyard decreased significantly. One of your neighbors, Torben Bentsen, took the time to contact Verizon and found out that, on that date, Verizon moved it's antenna from the Petromark Building to the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge. This move significantly deteriorated the service here at Brickyard.

Following the Squeaky Wheel Theory, you might want to call Verizon to complain. The number to call is 800-922-0204. Torben's complaint has generated a Trouble Ticket to which you may want to refer when you call. The ticket number is 412 695.

Finally, when I spoke with Verizon, they said they might install another antenna if they could find some land they could lease. Does this sound like a reasonable thing for the HOA to do? Click here to read what your neighbors think. What's your opinion?

Newsflash!

Word has it that Nextel is working to help solve our problem! They are attempting to work out an agreement with the City of Richmond to place a new antenna and relay out here. This system should work for all cell phone providers. So, hopefully, in a month or so, we will see an improvement in our cellular service. (August 2003)

But here's ANOTHER response:

Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless through our website. We regret to hear of the difficulty you are experiencing. We certainly understand the importance of having a wireless phone; however, please understand that wireless phones are intended for use while being wireless, or out in open areas. Wireless signals travel through the air to the nearest transmitter, or wireless tower. A wireless tower can cover a specific radius, measured in miles. Additionally, a wireless tower can only receive a specific number of signals for processing calls. You cannot receive a full signal inside of a building because the wireless signal cannot travel through brick, steel, or other material or there is no tower available near your complex.

You mentioned that others are receiving a compensation of $25.00. Unfortunately, we are unable to compensate you on a monthly basis. We currently do not have plans to install a tower for this area. Please write to us again through www.VerizonWireless.com if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,

Valerie J

Customer Service

Finally - Some Hope?

I had some problems about a year ago or so and after some calling was able to get it taken care of. I called again today. I was routed to the Texas Call Center and spoke to Gail employee # 2097. I told her about our problems and the number of customers here and that they probably could have many more customers if they solved this. She called me back later and explained that they are installing two new towers that together should cover all of our property. The problem is that the towers won't be finished until the beginning of November. In the meantime she said that Verizon will deduct $25 from our bill for each of the next two months. She said that this was cleared with her supervisor, Denise Baxter, and that I could let anyone here experiencing the same problems know that they would also qualify for the same credit. I plan to follow up in November.

I followed the suggestion above, called Verizon, and asked to be routed to the Texas Call Center. Some confusion since there are 2 of them, but when I mentioned the name of the supervisor and the offer that had been made, the representative who answered my call was happy to make the adjustment to my account. IT WORKED! - Ida

Someone else called and - after waiting 20 minutes to get to the Texas Call Center - was told that it was unnecessary to speak with that specific center. With the above information ANY customer service representative can give you the discount!

More Hope?

Hi Ida.

You and our neighbors might be interested in this:

On Monday, September 29, 2003 , representatives from Verizon met with the Commodore and harbormaster at the Richmond Yacht Club.

In short, it appears they came to an agreement that the RYC will have an antenna on its property that will give excellent coverage to the entire Brickyard area.

There still are permits that has to be obtained before the 32 foot mast can be erected, a realistic completion date is supposedly January of next year.

I am told that Cellular One has a somewhat efficient antenna that covers Brickyard and that Verizon is leasing limited bandwidth on this antenna. That is the reason the service is so unpredictable and varies in quality depending on Cellular One's needs. It is, however, due to be dismantled, so Verizon is scrambling to get the project done so they can be the best and only choice at Brickyard Cove.

I will keep you updated as I get additional information.

And on that same topic...

Hi Ida - I spoke with Cingular Wireless, with whom I have my cell phone service, and there are currently no plans to make any changes in 94801.  However, I was told Cingular is in the process of updating all their towers.

The primary reason I’m writing this is to say Verizon won’t be the “best and only choice” at the cove as our neighbor states.  Cingular is very much there also and I get great, full five-bar reception from my BYL unit.  However, for those who like Verizon, that’s great news!

------------

Ida,  It seems foolish for the condo assn to NOT consider allowing various cellular companies to use the height of the buildings at Brickyard for cellular antennas.  In our experience at Tahoe, the condo assn was taking in $2,000.00 per month from the lease of two cellular sites; one to Sprint and another to Cingular/SBC.  Yes, these folks do pay good money to install towers that amplify their signals. Since the condo assn was to be non-profit, the added income was used for all sorts of little costs that all owners thought useful but were not willing to raise the condo fees to cover.  Nice little profit center at little real expense for the assn. The wireless service provided all the gear and the installation.   Letting the RYC have this income, if offered to Brickyard first, seems a little foolis

Hi Ida

Just something to pass on to other residents, with the loss of our tower, Verizon has let me and at least two others out of their contract with no penalty. (ie a $175 savings)

Also I switched to ATT and at least can receive and make calls from here, not with great reception, but a lot better than verizon. I get all my calls and may drop some but I can at least make contact with the outside world.
