Richmond Bay Trail Mid Year 2006 Report

WITH 24 MILES COMPLETED, Richmond stands out as having more Bay Trail than any other City on this planned 500-mile hiking and biking route encircling San Francisco and San Pablo Bays. TRAC, the Trails for Richmond Action Committee, is working with the City of Richmond, East Bay Regional Park District and the private sector to close the 17 miles of gaps remaining in Richmond’s planned Bay Trail.

Check out TRAC’s colorful new Richmond Bay Trail web site at http://www.pointrichmond.com/baytrail/ where you will find user-friendly information, maps and links to help you explore and enjoy the recreational, natural and cultural treasures to be found along Richmond’s shoreline.

Interpretive Exhibits and Way Finding Signs

During the first six months of the year, 23 new interpretive exhibit panels and way finding signs were installed along the Bay Trail at the West County Landfilll, in Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline and parallel to Seacliff Drive and Brickyard Cove Road. TRAC’s Interpretive Subcommittee developed themes, stories and images for these exhibits, which were funded by Republic Services, East Bay Regional Park District and Toll Brothers.

In addition, the City of Richmond installed cautionary signs for bicyclists throughout Marina Bay. For locations of interpretive exhibits along Richmond’s Bay Trail see www.pointrichmond.com/baytrail/signs.htm

Marina Bay Trail Guide

The National Park Service, TRAC, and the Richmond Convention and Business Bureau are finalizing an attractive, informational guide to the cultural, recreational and natural features along the five miles of San Francisco Bay Trail located in the Marina Bay area of Richmond to showcase the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park. Printing and distribution plans are being pursued based on an attractive mockup created by Spokewise Design.

Closing The Gaps

See TRAC's new web site for information about plans and challenges for closing the 17 miles of gaps remaining in Richmond's Bay Trail at http://www.pointrichmond.com/baytrail/closinggaps.htm. Many thanks to David Moore of Sincere Design (http://www.sinceredesign.com/) for his creativity and hard work contributed pro bono in designing the new web site.

West County Landfill Bay Trail

In June Republic Services hosted an event celebrating opening the 1.4-mile Phase I of this trail. The entire three mile loop should be open by late 2007. For a trail map, see http://www.pointrichmond.com/baytrail/northernshoreline.htm.

Kaiser Shipyard 3

The Port of Richmond has received five construction design proposals for two miles of new Bay Trail linking Canal Blvd. at Seacliff Drive to the SS Red Oak Trail Marker Victory in Point Potrero Marine Terminal. Point Potrero is the site of historic Kaiser Shipyard 3, which is included in the Rosie The Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park. Design of the Bay Trail with three major interpretive sites will be funded by a $143K grant from ABAG Bay Trail Project and the California Coastal Conservancy supplemented by a $5K donation from Auto Warehousing Company (AWC) to the Rosie the Riveter Trust. The Port of Richmond and AWC are demonstrating that they can operate in harmony with the National Park and Bay Trail. For more information, see http://www.pointrichmond.com/baytrail/ferrypointshipyard3.htm.

Point Molate

The City of Richmond and Upstream Point Molate LLC signed an amendment to their Land Disposition Agreement allowing a first phase sale of 30 acres of land at the south end of the property inland of Western Drive prior to sorting out the feasibility of the proposed Indian gambling casino-hotel complex proposed for the Winehaven Historic District. The amended agreement specifies that this first phase will fund construction of the Bay Trail along the entire 1.4-mile shoreline of the former Naval Fuel Depot with an average 50-foot wide shoreline public access area. In addition, the initial 30-acre development — presumably for housing — will include development of at least an additional 60 acres of parks and open space inland of the Bay Trail.

Meeker Tidal Creek Trail

The Planning Commission and City Council approved an agreement that Bio-Rad, TRAC and the City Planning Department worked out to widen the existing narrow trail along the north side of Meeker Tidal Creek between S. 32nd Street and Regatta Blvd. As a result, Bio-Rad will grant a public access easement on a portion of their land, relocate a fence and maintain the widened Meeker Tidal Creek Trail.
