  • Through September Washington Elementary School in Point Richmond is now accepting applications for its Dual Language Immersion (“DLI”) Program.  This is a unique academic opportunity as Washington is home to the only DLI program in the district.  Currently, there are openings in their 5th, 4th and 1st grade classes.  Washington’s Dual Immersion program was established five years ago so that children could learn to become bilingual and bi-literate in Spanish and English.  It has shown overwhelmingly positive results, for example, almost half of the fourth grade class has tested into the Gifted and Talented Program.  A bilingual brain results in smart children. Students new to English gain from the chance to build a strong literacy base in their home language.  All students reach academic achievement levels equivalent to or better than their conventionally schooled grade-level peers.  Half of the daily curriculum in both fourth and fifth grade is taught in Spanish, so children wishing to enter the program after first grade would need to be familiar with Spanish and pass a language test.  It’s a unique opportunity for families who are interested in establishing academic excellence in two languages. Families who are interested should call 231-1417 and schedule a test for their child with our 4th grade teacher, Mr. Brandow.

  • Through July 4 The Masquers Playhouse presents Lady Windermere's Fan. This Victorian romance sparkles with Wilde’s trademark comedy of manners, repartée, epigrams, and witty dialogue all the while tugging at our heartstrings. Lady Windermere, shattered by the suspicion of her husband’s infidelity, contemplates affairs of the heart as her rival illustrates the difference between true morality and its mere appearance. A classic masterpiece, studded with humorous quips and clever paradoxes. Call 232-4031 for reservations or reserve on line.

  • Through July 18 New Exhibitions at the Richmond Art Center. Kurt Wold - Machinations. Kurt Wold is a dynamic artist whose kinetic installations referencing bicycles are used as a metaphor for life’s precariousness. His work reveals the artist’s depth of contemplation of both the physicality of the bike with its strong geometric compositions, its implied motion, and provocative memories of childhood use. The Girl’s bike series makes the point that the bicycle is the only gender specific means of transportation These ideas are the launching point for a more probing question that both he and Clayton Bailey share. What are the true parameters of art within and without the artificial affirmation gallery exhibitions too often provide. Clayton and Betty Bailey - Robots and Watercolors. Clayton Bailey’s installation of his humorous robots offers an opportunity to explore this idea further. His metal figures are made from select car and appliance parts, aluminum cookware and other finds from flea markets. To date his has made over 100 life-size sculptures that are figurative or beastly. Many are engineered to blink or make a sound prompted by the viewer. How unusual! Instead of standing back in restraint, some of Bailey’s sculptures are designed to stir proprietary confusion, establishing a sense of fun not usually seen in a serious gallery environment. Richmond Art Center 2540 Barrett Ave. 620-6772.
