Cell Phones

  • The three people in my family who use Cingular have all noticed that our reception has deteriorated since the installation of Verizon across the street. (June, 2006)

  • When we first moved in our Verizon cell phone coverage was non-existent except on the deck.  Chris and I both got new LG phones from Verizon and we can now use them anywhere in the condo with no problems at all.  We both highly recommend Verizon, but recommend one has to get a new phone. (June, 2006)

  • Cingular reception has definitely deteriorated over the past few months.  Not only is the reception not as good as it once was but it is now intermittent.  I understand that they moved their antenna awhile back. (June, 2006)

  • I don’t have Cingular but I thought it would be worth mentioning Verizon for any new people in the area.  Since Verizon put in the new “antenna” across the street at the Yacht Club my reception has been nothing short of fantastic here at BYL.  My cell phone even works fine in the far end (away from the entrance) of the G1 garage in D building.  There is still the “dead” spot as you come over the hill on Seacliff, and it’s inconsistent in the park … but everywhere it’s perfect. (June, 2006)

  • RE: Cell phones....I have had Cingular for 5+ years and found reception very good.  In my conversations with others, I believe Cingular is the only service for our little corner of the world at the present time. I heard that Verizon is intending to install an antenna at the Richmond Yacht Club in the future. You are welcome to contact me and check out my bars! John Mullany 215 8737 jlmii@jps.net (May, 2005)
  • I have had Cingular for several years.  I rarely get "dropped," driving around the Bay Area, except for one particular place on Highway 4 near Martinez.  Here at BYL I have always enjoyed the four full bars of signal strength.   I highly recommend Cingular. (May, 2005)
  • Our Cingular reception is adequate--not great, but much better than it was a year ago. (May, 2005)
  • cingular is great service (May, 2005)
  • My Cingular service was reliable when I was there last month. (May, 2005)
  • Ida - I have recently started using a Cingular cellphone here at BYL.  I have found the service to be excellent.  Not perfect, but, compared to Sprint, generally great. I can now make calls from this side of the tunnel and from the pool - one of my goals in life!  At home in Bldg C, the phone works a bit unevenly, but more than adequately. Perhaps I should mention that I have one of the new multi-band phones, so someone with an older phone might not get the same results.  As always, "Your mileage may vary"! (May, 2005)
  • Just updated my Verizon phone and the coverage is much better! Also, there's talk of an antenna being installed across the street, which should significantly improve the service. (May, 2005)
  • Still like Verizon. Had a lot of reception problems with my old phone; got a new phone and the worst scenario is I have to go into the solarium. (February, 2005)
  • Hi Ida - I have recently switched to Cingular in order to get reception, and I am very happy!!! I had friends who would be visiting and they were using their Cingular cell phones with full signal strength. I was shocked. I had AT&T prior and had no reception. Don't let people be fooled by the AT&T/Cingular merger - yes the two merged on paper, but the network is not yet one entity. I was also told that the phone itself is important for signal strength, so I bought one of the higher end Motorola's. I am thrilled to be able to call long distance now for free! (February, 2005)
  • I've written this before and I'll write it again. I have been very, very happy with my Cingular Wireless cell phone coverage here at BYL. My phone consistently shows "five full bars" of connectivity. I experience no "dropped calls" when at home. When I'm driving about within the Bay Area, rarely do I experience "dropped calls". I do not have connectivity in downtown Point Richmond. However, I believe that's just a major trouble spot as I'm aware of others, who have Sprint or Verizon service, who also experience difficulty in downtown Point Richmond. I also like the "rollover minutes" option which Cingular offers. Unused minutes are rolled over to the following month, so I never run out of minutes. I imagine the marriage of Cingular and AT&T should enhance the ability for Cingular to offer good service. (February, 2005)
  • At&t (now Cingular) "gsm" (the newer standard) service is way better than old "digital pcs". Cove service can still be occasionally spotty, but, I can often get all the signal bars now from inside my unit in d building. The new standard is also good from inside buildings though coverage areas are best in large metropolitan areas and there are parts of the u.s. without coverage yet. Also, with the right kind of phone (like a treo 600 [dialup data] or 650 [wireless data]), it'll work in most major cities across the globe (except for the pacific rim Asian countries like Japan and Korea, which stubbornly cling to their own unique frequencies (or whatever they call them). (February, 2005)
  • Verizon is OK, though it is not as great as it was. (February, 2005)
  • Cingular works great in 1300 Quarry Ct. (February, 2005)
  • We have been having good cell phone reception with ATT/Cingular, at least at higher elevations. (February, 2005)
  • From no service once through the tunnel to now being able to use my cell phone all the way to my garage entrance [B, G-1], was the result of switching over to to GSM service with my same provider (ATT). I have fair to good service in my 1st floor unit, with better reception as I go up in floors (it's always better at the top...). No service in the garages or stairwells. The ATT merge with Cingular is now complete and that caused me to have to make a few minor adjustments to my phone (I still go back-and forth between the ATT/GSM and Cingular signals). Anyway, while not perfect, I'm much more satisfied and can now use my cell phone for all my long distance. (February, 2005)
  • For those of us who still have Verizon Wireless better service is around the corner. The City has finally issued the permit, so construction is scheduled for May and the service should be  up and running in June. There will be an antenna at the Richmond Yacht Club small boat yard beaming into the cove with a repeater out towards the breakwater. (February, 2005)
  • I just started using Cingular and it works really well. In our place and at the pool too. (March, 2005)
