Internet Connectivity Recommendations

Until ATT runs fiber to your unit Comcast will offer faster speeds. As far as I know the fiber terminates down by the tennis court. Old wiring from there on.

See yelp for Uverse low ratings

and the other thing they don't tell you is about the claim that you can record 4 shows at once. They don't say that is only standard def and not an option for HDTV.

I went to the hilltop Comcast and to qualify for the el cheapo "as seen on tv" bundle they closed my old account and started fresh. You lose your old Comcast email address but I never used it anyway. (March 2012)

AT&T will give you phone + internet service via their U-verse (fiber optic) offering for about $46 per month (as perhaps you already know). With a good Yagi-type (not rabbit ears) indoor antenna you can get decent basic TV service over-the-air, as you may also know.  If you require many channels and premium service e.g. for HBO, you can use the full U-verse bundle (probably the best deal financially) or else keep the Comcast cable. I made the switch over to a Comcast/Infinity bundle last August.
I too had been an AT&T Phone/Internet customer (forever), with Comcast for TV at the time of the switch. (The change in service providers was prompted by the repeated copper wire heists that left us AT&T folks w/out Internet for extended periods.)
The bundle rate I received (TV, Phone & Internet) was as a brand new customer to Infinity, despite having previously been a Comcast (TV) subscriber. I'm saving ~ $50.-$60./ mo. for the first year, and it should not be any more than AT&T rates after that period.

That guy showed up at my door, also, and wouldn't take no for an answer. Compare the channel access offered VERY closely, as I believe that may reveal a big difference, especially if you are a "premium" network fan (i.e. HBO, etc). Also, I was tired of my ever-increasing AT&T landline rates, a service I use very little but choose  to continue.  Overall, I'm glad I switched and fairly satisfied. (March 2012)

We once made the mistake of switching to ATT as our Internet service provider.

The service was utterly unreliable.  But what made matters much much worse was the horrid customer service.

Wait times beyond 15 minutes were not unusual, often followed by conversations with a string of people who were confused and / or confusing.  We once had to wait 5 business days to get our Internet service restored.

That’s when we went back to Comcast.

1st let me disclose that I'm an AT&T employee.

It is true ATT has installed an new fiber optic system here at BYL and is offering a TV service called U-verse. I have it and have to say I am very happy with it - picture quality as well as station/content offerings.
I was a long time customer of Comcast and got tired of my bill going up without notice (or none that I ever was aware of) every few months only to be lowered again after threatening to cancel. That got old to say the least! Now I have better service and stable billing for the term I signed up for which was 2 years. After that we'll see. Good luck in whatever choice you make. (March 2012)

After two years of frustration, we changed our service in December '11, we changed our service to Verizon, with great delight.  To date, we have had no issue with dropped calls. (March 2012)

I asked colleagues of mine and they all agreed that I had two options: AT&T U-Verse and Comcast. I decided to give Comcast a chance because I was satisfied with them in the past, and right now I am not very happy with the AT&T cell phone reception, even though I like their customer service.

I checked the Comcast web page and I was overwhelmed with their variety of choices, so I decided to call a representative last Thursday. The person I spoke with was pleasant and knowledgeable, he started suggesting few options that I made clear I did not like, and I did not want any bundles, TV and telephone voice service, and that I was only interested in a good, fast and reliable internet connection, that I need when I work at home. Like in the past, I realized that I had to bargain. So I continued to say NO and finally he started with few "special" offers, and at the end I accepted a 20Mbps connection with a very low introductory monthly fee (I already know that after 12 months I can renegotiate) and the installation fee was half the one we started with. When he said they could come the next Saturday, I asked if it was possible to do it sooner and he found a spot for the day after, Friday.

Next day, the guy was "only" one hour late, but he was extremely friendly, fast and with good knowledge of what he was doing, we made few jokes while he was working (and of course he was very surprised that I do not have cable tv), and in less than one hour my internet connection was up and running, and it is blazing fast, less than 24 hours I made the call. We have Comcast which works really well.  My only problem with it is the price.  And I would prefer not to have a house phone. (December, 2010)
_____

We signed up for AT&T U-verse (different from AT&T's DSL service) for both Internet and TV service about six months ago when it first became available in our complex. We've been very pleased with the Internet speed. They have several choices for Internet speeds, depending on whether you're just doing basic Web surfing and email vs. downloading/sending lots of photo files vs. doing big-time gaming and movie downloads. We also like AT&T U-verse lots better than Comcast for TV, which you can bundle with Internet service or buy separately. We've also been very pleased with their customer service. We had one of our DVRs go out and they sent a repair guy out the same day that we called. (December, 2010)

I have had DSL through ATT for over 5 years and I'm very happy with it. It's never slow and I had such a terrible experience with Comcast I will never go back. Also, Dish network for satellite TV. The dish works fine through the solarium glass windows. (December, 2010)
_____

You might want to let BYL homeowners that AT&T U-Verse is available in the area.  U-Verse can provide Home Phone, High Speed Internet and TV. (December, 2010)
_____

Earlier this year, we switched from Comcast TV and internet to a bundled package from AT&T including DSL, U-verse TV and home phone. We opted for the slowest wi-fi connection (3 MB, I believe?) which AT&T told us would be plenty fast enough for email, downloading movies and streaming video. So far, so good. Everything works great. The speed is quite acceptable. I love the U-verse TV, which includes an easy-to-use HD DVR and a fairly straightforward remote. Brings out the best on our two HD TVs, even one that is about three years old. I especially like being able to watch recorded shows on either of our TVs. I think Comcast may now offer that feature also, but they didn't last year.

The bundled package is about $120 per month--two HD TVs, one DVR. The home phone is stripped bare--no long distance, no caller ID, nothing (maybe call forwarding, can't recall.) We use Verizon cell phones for outgoing calls and voice mail. If people are paying less, that would be nice to know. (December, 2010)
