• Did you know that our local Richmond Rescue opens their doors to the poor neighborhood that surrounds them and allow their neighbors to choose, at no cost, what they need from the donations they receive? Your clothing (washed and in good condition, please) and shoes for men, women and children--and large & small household items and furniture--are welcomed. They don't do pickups, but are open daytimes 6 days a week. Bring an estimated value; you will receive a receipt for your taxes. Richmond Rescue is just a few minutes away, at West MacDonald & 2nd. Go straight out the tunnel until you dead-end at the road leading to the Richmond Parkway. Turn left, then take a right at the lights at West MacDonald. In a few blocks, turn left at Second St and take an immediate left into the Richmond Rescue parking lot. If you need more info: 215-4887.  

• For furniture donations - contact OUT OF THE CLOSET on University Avenue in Berkeley - they'll come get the furniture, provide a receipt.  Salvation Army also will do this; phone number is in the phone book. (March, 2006)

• Washington School is collecting empty printer cartridges and used cell phones to recycle for money. If you  or your business have any of these items for donation please contact Diane Anderson at 234-3333. She    will work with you to arrange a pick up that is easy and painless for your organization! They'll take copier cartridges, printer cartridges (inkjet or laser) and fax cartridges along with any old cell phones (they do    not have to be in working condition). What a great way to recycle and help the school! (March, 2006)

• The Friends of the Richmond Public Library are seeking book donations for their book sales. If you have unwanted books that are in good condition please drop them off in the donation bin in the main library 325 Civic Center Plaza. If you are unable to take your books to the library, contact Ellen Liebman at 644-4296. CDs, DVDs and videos are also welcome. (March, 20060

• Mt. Diablo Habitat for Humanity seeks volunteers of any skill levels to help rehab a home in Martinez which will be used to house our wonderful AmeriCorps team members and other groups of young people  who help build homes for Contra Costa County families in need of decent, safe, and affordable housing. Office volunteers and committee members are also needed (finance, forward planning, construction, volunteer, public relations, fund development). • Regarding furniture donations - Oakland Museum of Calif. White Elephant Sale (which earns over $l million per yr for Museum) has pick up service;  510-839-5919. leave a message, and you'll hear back re when van can come to Richmond. (March, 2006)

  Donation information  The White Elephant Truck is now collecting merchandise for the 2007 sale. If you wish to donate to the sale, for large items, please call 510/839-5919 for free van pick-up.   3) The Pt Richmond Methodist church accepts donations that go to their annual "Junktique" sale and then leftovers are distributed to newly arriving refugees sponsored by the International Rescue Committee.  Contact Lorraine Parmer at 233-1792 if you want to donate to the church.  (Lorraine lives here at BYL and is an active member of the church.)

  4) www.freecycle.org (information submitted by one of our neighbors)

  You go to that web site and submit your free stuff. People call or e-mail. There are only a few conditions.

  a. Your description must be honest

  b. The first person that responses get the ‘first right of refusal'.

  c. It must be absolutely free

  d. You can agree to deliver it or they can agree to pick it up.

  e. You must establish a Yahoo account. Go to Yahoo.com. Sign up. Then go to freecycle.org. and on the left hand side you pick US West Coast. Then 'pick'

  San Francisco bay area east bay. And then pick the join button.

  5) 1-800-Got-Junk (1-800-468-5865) or www.1800gotjunk.com  Their website says that they recycle over 50% of the items they pick up and that in some cases they drop off items at charitable organizations.

• Mary’s House is always in need of donations.  Especially GENTLY used household items for their 12 bed residential care home that they all work together to manage and treat like their own home.  They also need GENTLY used maternity/larger size women’s clothing and newborn/infant clothing and accessories.  These women are literally going to Mary’s house off of the street and/or coming from abusive relationships with nothing but the clothes on their backs.  Their household needs everything from office equipment, kitchen items, bedding, etc.  Whatever they don’t use, they have a little store where they can work and sell these items.  This teaches them real-world skills that teaches them about money, selling, customer service etc.  They also need volunteers for many different things and you can contact Analyn (pronounced Anna-Lynn) for more details.  You don’t have to be Catholic to live there, to donate, or to volunteer.  Analyn will also give you a donation form for taxes for donations.
